Eco advocates urge Aquino to lead in protecting the environment

A Catholic group that advocates for ecological
protection, has called on President Benigno Aquino III to be in the
forefront in safeguarding the environment.

The Franciscan family, a group of religious and secular institutes
that lives the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi said that global
warming is one the most vital problems in the country.

“The effects of global warming/climate change are now felt all over
the world. While on some parts of the world there are floods, intense
droughts at other parts destroy farms, among others,” the group said
in a statement.

The group then asked Aquino to resist pressure in using Public-Private
Partnership (PPP) to destroy the environment and eliminate corruption
in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to
effectively implement the plan of actions for the growth of the
surroundings.

The group also noted ways such as simplifying one’s lifestyle;
implementing proper waste management; resisting Genetically Modified
Organisms and promoting organically grown products; conserving water
and energy; and engaging government in protecting environment to
“re-connect” with Mother Earth.

“We are challenged to work for the well being of the future
generation, especially the poor who are the most vulnerable to the
effects of global warming/climate change and yet have contributed
least to the destruction of the world.”
