Public warned on use of imported beauty products

The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on Tuesday said it will look into reports the resurgence of imported beauty products that were earlier tested and found to contain mercury.

FDA Director Nazarita Tacandong said that FDA inspectors are going to check the areas where the beauty products are reportedly being peddled.

On Tuesday, Ecowaste Coalition revealed that banned skin whitening creams and other beauty products that contain mercury have been found by members of their “AlerToxic Patrol” in its market surveillance conducted between December 1 to 7.

Ecowaste said 10 of the 28 skin whitening creams that were found to contain mercury exceeding 1 part per million (ppm) can be found in some beauty shops and Chinese drugstores.

According to the group, they found the products being sold in stores located in Binondo, Divisoria and Quiapo in Manila, Guadalupe Shopping Center, Makati Cinema Square in Makati City, Starmall Alabang in Muntinlupa City and Baclaran Terminal Plaza Mall in Pasay City.

Ecowaste said they have receipts of purchases of the banned beauty products such as “Beauty Girl Ginseng and Green Cucumber,” “Beauty Girl Olive and Sheep Essence,” “ Dr. Bai,” “Jiao Li 7-Days Eliminating Freckle AB Set,” “Jiao Li 10-Days Eliminating Freckle Day and Night Set,” “Jiaoli Huichusu,” “Jiaoli Huichusu Whitening Speckles Removal Cream,” “Jiaoli Miraculous Cream,” “JJJ Magic Spot Removing Cream,” and “S’Zitang.”

In February, FDA warned against Jiao Li Miraculous cream, Jiao Li Huichusu miraculous cut genuine and Jiao Li 2+1 7 days clearing facial spots suit beauty products.

Tacandong said there is due process being carried out before products are disallowed for commercial distribution. She said they have to test the batch procured whether the products actually contain mercury and if they were included in the previous FDA advisories.

She urged the public to be more vigilant against the said products and to report to FDA the stores selling these products.
