Muntinlupa Imposes Deadline on Plastic Bag Use

Business establishments in Muntinlupa City have
only up to January 17, 2011 to use plastic bags and
styrophor/styrofoam as packaging materials for wet and dry goods.

The Muntinlupa City government has started issuing notices of deadline
to all business establishments to remind them that the ordinance
prohibiting the use of plastic bags and styrophor/styrofoam materials
will take effect on Jan. 18 next year, urging them to use these
materials in their inventory before the law is implemented.

Muntinlupa City Ordinance 10-109 became a landmark local legislation
when it was enacted by the City Council and signed by Mayor Aldrin San
Pedro early this year prohibiting business establishments from using
plastic bags and styrofoam/styrophor materials as packaging materials
for dry and wet goods.

Ecowaste Coalition, a pro-environment advocacy group, commended the
Muntinlupa City government when it enacted the ordinance last January
to reduce the so-called “white pollution.”
